About the School Committee

The Waltham School Committee consists of six members chosen at large by ballot from the registered voters of Waltham and the Mayor who serves as Chair. The term of office is four years.

The general policy of the Waltham School Committee is to maintain a public school system which will provide opportunities for each student and each adult to develop his/her potential to its utmost; to become a citizen of maximum value to his/her community, state and nation; to develop a climate which fosters high ethical and moral standards, is supportive and respectful of all school community members, and is conducive to learning and growing.

All questions of general policy, which may include, to the extent allowed by law, establishing educational goals and policies, establishing performance standards for, and the employment process of personnel, the selection and termination of the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendents, and the review and approval of budgets shall be settled by a formal vote of the majority of the Committee.

The School Committee meets twice a month, usually on the first and third Wednesday of the month, excepting July and August. Meetings typically begin at 7:00pm and are held at Waltham High School and are broadcast live, and repeated the following day at noon, over the local public access station which is broadcast on channel 15 (RCN) and channel 98 (Comcast). Meetings are open to the public and community members are encouraged to attend.
