Health Assisting Program Receives Final Approval

Mr. Michael Grace, Director of the Career & Technical Education Department; Mr. Paul Maoirano, Waltham High Principal; and Dr. Brian Reagan, Waltham Schools Superintendent, are excited to share with the Waltham Community that our Health Assisting Program has received final approval from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to be certified as a Ch.74 vocational program. This multi-year process included numerous submissions of supporting documentation, meetings, and inspections by both DESE as well as the Department of Public Health (DPH). Adult Learning Center Waltham - FREE Classes

The Middlesex Community College Adult Learning offers FREE classes for adult learners interested in improving their basic academic skills and / or preparing for the HiSET, GED, further education, job training or better employment. This fall, The Adult Learning Center will hold classes online and will include live, interactive sessions taught by instructors as well as independent work done by students outside of class time.

Newly Launched Wraparound Waltham Awarded $1.5M Grant

The Newton-Wellesley Hospital (NWH) Collaborative for Healthy Families and Communities (CHF&C) is facilitating a major community effort aimed at addressing disparities in high school graduation rates among Waltham students. Wraparound Waltham, a newly formed collaborative, will lead this groundbreaking work. Wraparound Waltham is led by the Waltham Partnership for Youth (WPY) and includes Waltham Boys and Girls Club, Children’s Charter (a division of The Key Program, Inc.), Doc Wayne Youth Services and The Right to Immigration Institute.

Waltham High School Equity Grant

In January of 2018, Waltham High School received an Equity Grant from the Nellie Mae Education Foundation (NMEF). Using this grant, WHS has partnered with Teaching Excellence Network (TEN) to support an equity audit of Waltham High School and to determine the root causes of inequities that exist in our system. In order to spark a community discussion about the priorities the school should focus on to address inequities, the school administered a survey using a platform that aligns the voices of educators, students and parents.

The Waltham Partnership for Youth Summer Internships provide 32 students with the opportunity to gain hands on experience in diverse career paths. Kaytie Dowcett started the program last year with just 6 employers, mostly consisting of her colleagues and friends. Waltham Public Schools is very fortunate to have this amazing Officer overseeing safety and security in our schools. A well-deserved award!
Priya Patel Awarded 2018 Coca-Cola Scholarship

Waltham High School Principal Greg Demeo has announced that Waltham High Senior Priya Patel has been named as one of only 150 recipients of the 2018 Coca-Cola Scholars. Priya will receive a $20,000 college scholarship and she will be honored at the 2018 Scholars Weekend’s 30th Annual Scholars Banquet in April. Priya will also participate in a Leadership Development Institute for intensive leadership training. Coke Scholars are change agents, positively affecting others in their community, and we are very proud of Priya. Congratulations Priya!

This month's Artist Spotlight features work by Eric, a 5th grade student at MacArthur Elementary School. Eric and his classmates closely observed and rendered each feature of their faces using mirrors, pencils, and 4"x4" squares of drawing paper. Students then constructed their faces by collaging the square studies, layering paper to create a contemporary self-portrait. Nice work Eric!

Students in Grade 3 at Stanley Elementary School used oil pastels and mirrors, to create self-portraits holding their poses of “The Scream” by Munch. They worked hard to achieve the expression, as well as their skin tone. They then painted an anxiously perceived, “bloody sunset”. Keily's brilliant interpretation speaks volumes for her talent, and her work speaks for us all during this cold weather!

Crazy for Science Week

A recent article in PTO Today featured the Crazy for Science Week at Northeast Elementary School. The article highlights the unique weeklong event that took place in February 2017 with dozens of professionals who shared their expertise with elementary school students. The event was a fantastic opportunity whereby students learned to build robots, learned the science behind volcanoes, learned about the importance of oceans, and more.

Advantages and disadvantages to both sites are outlined in a recent Op-Ed prepared and submitted by Waltham School Building Committee Co-Chairs Superintendent Drew Echelson and High School Principal Gregory DeMeo. TEACHERS, PARENTS AND GUARDIANS – DID YOU KNOW? The Waltham Education and Beyond Foundation has funded over $118,000 in grants to teachers at all school levels. Grants funded by the WEBF and the Sally Elizabeth Peters Enrichment Program have allowed teachers to implement new curriculum programs and purchase new technology and equipment for their classrooms. A Letter from Superintendent Echelson to the Waltham Community

In a recent letter to the Waltham Community, Dr. Echelson has informed families of several confirmed cases of Influenza (Flu) and an increase in student absentee rates in our schools. Most students are presenting with a headache and fever above 100 degrees F. Dr. Echelson has spoken with the local Board of Health, and they have confirmed the Flu is present in the Waltham community, much more so than last year, and numbers are increasing. Families, students, and school staff can help keep from getting sick with flu in several ways. Please read on for more steps to take...

In an exciting move toward a more streamlined approach toward effective communication, Dr. Elizabeth Homan, Administrator of EdTech Integration, has announced a timeline for a gradual and phased plan to implement GMail as the single e-mail and calendar system for Waltham Public Schools. There are three phases outlined in Dr. Homan's plan, beginning in February 2017. All phases are detailed with expectations and steps to consider for a smooth transition.
