About DIIT

The Department of Instructional and Information Technology (DIIT) consists of the Technology Leadership Team, which includes representatives from each of our departmental teams:

Bio
Elizabeth Homan came to Waltham Public Schools in 2015 after working as middle school, high school, and post-secondary teacher in the Midwest and as a Digital Learning Specialist for Boston Public Schools. As Administrator of Educational Technology Integration and leader of the Department of Instructional and Information Technology Department for Waltham Public Schools, Dr. Homan seeks to promote and support innovative education that makes purposeful and rigorous use of digital technologies in Waltham classrooms.

Before moving to Massachusetts, Dr. Homan completed her doctoral work at The University of Michigan, where her dissertation work focused on secondary teachers' social learning and integration of digital technologies across disciplines. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in English and Secondary Education from The University of Illinois in 2007 and her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Purdue University in 2009. During these years she also taught 8th, 9th, and 10th grade English Language Arts in Indiana and university courses in writing and ELA teaching methods at both Purdue and Michigan.

When Dr. Homan is not thinking about how educators can richly integrate digital technologies into their practice, she can be found spending time with her daughter Finny, cooking in her kitchen, or enjoying a run with her dog along the Charles River. Her hobbies include crocheting, inventing new recipes, web design, and reading young adult novels.

Ms. Judi Paradis

Bio
Judi has been a K-5 library teacher for 15 years in Arlington and Waltham and has also worked in the Arlington Public Library Children's Room for 8 years managing a grant for children's programming. Judi is the past president of the Massachusetts School Library Association, is a representative to the American Association of School Libraries Affiliate Assembly, and serves as co-chair of the Sessions Committee for the 2015 AASL Annual Conference.

Judi has presented workshops on collaborative teaching, reading incentives, research process and multiculturalism in school libraries for MSLA, AASL, Salem State University and Simmons College. Her work has been published in the MSLA Forum and in School Library Connection. Judi has her BA in English Education from the University of New Hampshire and her MEd in Library/Media Studies from Salem State University, and is licensed in Library/Media, Instructional Technology, and Secondary English. Judi is highly dedicated to developing and teaching research skills in cross-curricular projects and multicultural collection development and outreach. When she’s not thinking about these important things, she can be found reading, cross-country skiing,or traveling!

Sandra Malec is currently the Instructional Technology Specialist at Kennedy Middle School where she teaches a Technology Literacy Class to sixth graders and works with amazing teachers to assist them in integrating technology into their curriculum. She graduated from BSU with a Master’s of Education and began teaching third grade at MacArthur School in 1997. In 2000 she completed a Master’s Degree in Instructional Technology and in 2001 became an ITS in Waltham Public Schools elementary schools and eventually middle schools. When she is not helping students and teachers work with technology, or taking courses to keep up with the latest and greatest in tech, she can be found at various sports fields and courts watching her children play football, soccer, basketball or softball. She also enjoys traveling and watching the Patriots with her family.

Bio
Ryan Foley graduated from Waltham High School in 2003 and went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree from Endicott College in 2007. Ryan began working in the Waltham Public School System in 2007 in the Special Education department. He found that he enjoyed working closely with students and the endless possibilities that technology brings to our schools and joined the Network Info Structure Team in 2013. Ryan is also a softball and hockey coach at Waltham High School. Outside of work, Ryan enjoys watching sports, staying active, playing hockey and running.

Bio
Bob Kennen is a technician with the WPS and is responsible for the troubleshooting and repairs of a wide range of technology, at the Fitzgerald, Northeast, and MacArthur schools. Bob has over 28 years of experience, troubleshooting many different technologies, with the last 16 at the WPS.

Mr. Kevin Long

Bio
Kevin has been teaching at WHS for 10 years; eight years as a business teacher and two years as the high school Instructional Technology teacher! While at work, his favorite moments are those when he’s in the classroom with students. He loves to see how creative and excited students get when technology is incorporated into their learning. When he’s not teaching, he is constantly collaborating with teachers and helping prepare innovative and exciting lessons and projects behind-the-scenes. After school in the fall you will find him coaching the boys & girls cross country teams. An avid runner, Kevin has completed five marathons (two Boston) and many half-marathons and shorter races. He lives in Boston (Dorchester) with his soon-to-be husband and has a French Bulldog named Mr. Porkchop (who often makes appearances in his lessons and professional development presentations). Kevin loves taking advantage of all Boston has to offer, trying new restaurants, and never turns down a night with friends over a good dinner and tons of laughter!
Ms. Allison McCrary

Allison McCrary is an Instructional Technology Specialist at McDevitt Middle School in Waltham, MA, where she has worked with teachers and students in grades 6 – 8 for nearly seven years. Prior to joining the Waltham community, Alli taught Video Production and Computer skills to teachers and students at Dedham Middle School in Dedham, MA. Her professional experience also includes 14 years of video, televison and web production for various educational institutions, including WGBH, Channel 2 in Boston at MCET in Cambridge. She holds a Master's Degree in Education, a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication and Television Production, and a K-12 Instructional Technology teaching license from Lesley University’s Graduate School of Education. In addition to being inspired by middle school children every day, Alli enjoys running, yoga, hiking, gardening, and being with her two children (ages 7 and 12) and two Siamse cats (ages 4 and 5).

Holly Walsh Connolly has been working in the Waltham Public Schools for sixteen years. She started her teaching career teaching both third and fourth grade at two different elementary schools in Waltham before becoming an Instructional Technology Specialist in 2008. Her own children are all elementary school aged and Holly enjoys working with her own children on new technologies that she can bring to the classroom. She enjoys continually taking courses to keep up with the latest technology happenings. When not at work, Holly enjoys spending time traveling with her family and chauffeuring her children to their endless afterschool activities and sporting events. She loves seeing so many Waltham students outside of school at the soccer field, the basketball court, the baseball field, dance recitals and gymnastics shows!
Ms. Margaret Keohane

Bio
Peggy Keohane started working in the Waltham Public Schools in 1998, first as a permanent sub for the Instructional Technology Department, then in the Title I program and starting in 2005 as an Instructional Technology Teacher. The first three years she taught at McDevitt Middle School and currently teaches at the MacArthur and Plympton Elementary Schools. After college and while her four children were in school she worked as a Medical Lab Technologist at Waltham Hospital. Her interest in the laboratory becoming computerized made her realize there was a real need of teaching K-12 students about computers and the constantly changing technologies. After Waltham Hospital closed Peggy continued her studies, and received her Master’s Degree in Educational Technology. She is always taking courses and attending conferences to keep up to date with the latest educational technologies. When not at school she enjoys traveling and spending time with her friends and family, especially her 6 grandchildren.

Bio
Judy Vizard has been working in the Waltham Public Schools since 2003. She is the Instructional Technology Specialist at the FitzGerald and Whittemore Elementary Schools. In addition to Instructional Technology, she is also a licensed elementary teacher. Prior to becoming a teacher, she worked as a graphic designer and web designer. She loves working with students and teachers to integrate technology into the curriculum and their daily lives. When not at work, she enjoys spending time with her family. Judy and her husband Joe have two little ones that keep them very busy. She loves that she gets to see so many students whenever she’s out walking around the neighborhood!

Ms. Rebekah Tierney

Bio
Rebekah Tierney, known as Reba, is the library teacher at Waltham High School. Reba has over 12 years of experience as a high school librarian, having previously worked in Boston and Quincy. Reba has also worked in Academic and Public libraries, and currently works as a Sunday sub for the Duxbury Public Library. She is active in The American Library Association, The Young Adult Library Services Association, and is currently serving as the American Association of School Libraries Affiliate Assembly, through the Massachusetts School Library Association. Reba has previously served on the Massachusetts Library System Youth Services Committee. She received her Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Rhode Island in 2003. Her passion is connecting students with books and opening up the world of reading for them, as well as promoting equitable access to library resources for all students.

Reba is an avid lover of animals, nature, and random trivia. When she is not working, you can find Reba reading, traveling, hanging out with her husband and family, or spending as much time as possible on the beach or near the ocean.

Lucy Clerkin is a Library Teacher at McDevitt Middle School with 13 years of experience in school library programming and management. Lucy brings a passion for collaboration, curriculum design, and technology integration into the school library and classroom environments. Lucy co-chairs the Waltham Public Schools Bullying Prevention and Intervention Committee, is a New-Teacher Mentor, a member of the Instructional Leadership Team (ILT), an active member of the Massachusetts School Library Association (MSLA), EDCO Collaborative, and serves as Research Assistant and member of the Waltham Integration Network Project. Lucy has an MS from the Library and Information Science School Library Program from Simmons College, MS in Administration from Boston College and a BA in Communication from Boston College.

Kathy May is the Library Teacher at Kennedy Middle School. She loves reading and talking about books with students and teachers. She enjoys learning and sharing digital literacy with students and teachers. She is always taking courses and workshops in technology and literature. Mrs. May graduated from Regis College with a BA in English Literature and earned a Masters Degree from Simmons College School of Library and Information Science. Mrs. May has worked as a Children’s Librarian in Bedford, Mass., and Reference Librarian at St. Joseph’s College in Philadelphia before coming to the Waltham Public Schools. Outside of school, Mrs. May enjoys swimming, yoga, and playing tennis with friends. She spends a lot of the summer sailing with her husband and two sons. In the fall and early winter, Mrs. May watches as many Patriots games as possible with her 96 year-old mother, who is an avid fan.

Keri Johnson has been working in Waltham at Stanley Elementary School for two years as the school library teacher. She began her career in Chelsea as the library teacher to 2,600 students in grades 1-4. She absolutely loves exploring new books and authors with students and working one on one with them to find that perfect book. She also enjoys teaching kids to be independent researchers of the boundless information the library offers. When Keri is not at school, she loves hiking with her husband and two Siberian Huskies, visiting her family and getting together with friends.
Ms. Carol Klatt

Bio
Carol Klatt completed her MBA and began her professional career in a high tech start up managing all facets of the manufacturing side as Director of MIS and eventually began her own consulting business modifying and programming business software. She took a break from full-time work to raise her two children, during this time doing technical writing contract work from her home office. When Garrett and Kaylyn were in upper elementary school, she returned to the workplace as a paraprofessional in a middle school library and later in the computer lab. While working at the middle school, she realized she had a passion for teaching and returned to graduate school to become a certified Library Teacher and Instructional Technology Specialist. She is an avid skier and competed in freestyle in her younger years. She has skied from Switzerland to Italy for lunch and back and many other places in Europe and the United States. She is also a dog lover, currently spending time babysitting her daughter’s two rambunctious beagles, Lily and Porter!

Stephanie Gehlen South is originally from Germany (English is her second language), has raised her two children in a bilingual and bicultural home, and loves helping her students discover different cultures and languages! She worked as an environmental journalist and editor before becoming a library teacher in Waltham in 2011 and appreciates that both jobs provide the opportunity to learn new things all the time. At work she focuses on new children’s literature, research, technology, and the maker movement (sometimes all at the same time). Outside of work she likes to discover new things too, on her own or with her family: books, music, recipes, places, and events. Her favorite part about being a library teacher is seeing students get excited about what they are learning and/or reading!

Debi Guelli has been an employee at Waltham High School since 1999. She worked in the Special Education Dept. as a student aide for 3 years. For the past 13 years, she is a paraprofessional in the Library/Media Center. Her main responsibility is managing the physical and digital collections and the daily operations of the library. She has also provided professional development for other library paras for cataloguing downloadable ebooks and audiobooks. Her two daughters have graduated from Waltham High School and have started their own businesses in the beauty industry. In her free time, Debi likes to travel to new places and do home improvement and design projects.
Ms. Joyce Guelli

Joyce has been working in the WHS library for 30 years! During those years, she was lucky enough to have had her own children (three daughters) graduate from Waltham High school and see them through college. Joyce has seen so many changes in the library over the years, from managing TVs and VCRs to now making sure the Innovation Lab and iPads are up and running; she is a true adaptor of change! Joyce enjoys attending many school activities including Dance Theater, Senior Review, and was a big part of the One School, One Story 24hr Read-a-thon this year. You can see Joyce overseeing the Student Services workers, preparing a teaching space for a class, and making sure things throughout the entire library are running smoothly. You might even catch her in a few of the WHS Lip Dubs, if you look closely! When Joyce isn’t working, she enjoys the lakes region of New Hampshire, her family, and is the foremost expert on all things Martha’s Vineyard.
Ms. Jeanne McDonald

Jeanne Magno McDonald has been volunteering/working in the Waltham Public Schools for 11 years. When her oldest son was born she gave up her business career and became a stay-at-home mom. Once her oldest started Kindergarten she became a volunteer in the school library and a PTO board member. Shortly after, she started substitute teaching in the elementary
schools and currently is also a part time paraprofessional at the High School Library. Jeanne has three boys, one in elementary school, one in middle school and one in High School. She enjoys being able to see her son as well as his friends while they are in school; always eager to help them in the Library and maybe even give them a snack as they pass by her desk. In her free time you will find her at the hockey rink, basketball courts and baseball fields. Jeanne is very active in the community and keeps busy volunteering for many schools and sports organizations. You will see her cooking French fries and stocking up the candy shelves at the Baseball field, on the board for some Waltham sports organizations, at the McDevitt School planning events and maybe even coaching a few basketball games for PALS basketball league.

Laurie Kiley has been a lifelong resident of Waltham. She has been volunteering and working for the Waltham Public Schools for the past 20 years. She is the mother of three children that have gone through the Waltham Public Schools. She has always been involved volunteering in the school system in a variety of different positions. Laurie was a former Co-President of Northeast Elementary PTO and Vice President of the Kennedy Middle School PTO.

Mrs. Kiley has spent many sleepless nights volunteering and lining up all the food donations for the All Night Party. She has been involved with numerous high school sports booster clubs and hosting team dinners. Laurie enjoys speaking to and assisting students at the Kennedy Middle School. She enjoys having her summer time off, going to the beach, and boating.

Barbara Walsh has volunteered/worked in school libraries for 25 years, the last 9 of them in the McDevitt Library. Working at McDevitt has been the perfect combination of all her interests: books, education and crafts. With a degree in English/Education and a lifelong pursuit of all things arts and crafts, she enjoys making the ever-changing library a welcoming supportive environment. When not in the library, Mrs. Walsh enjoys gardening and spending time with her family.
