Summer 2021 Program Offerings
Waltham Public Schools is fortunate to offer a variety of summer programs for its students. Please note, some programs are geared towards specific grade levels, student needs, and/or teacher referral. Read all information carefully: Summer Programs 2021
Health and Safety: Waltham Public Schools plans to hold in-person summer programming for the summer of 2021. Summer programming at all sites will follow health and safety protocols.
New This Year: Summer Fun in 2021! (All levels)
WPS is excited to offer a variety of opportunities for students at varying grade levels, throughout the summer, across numerous disciplines. This plans to be an enriching educational experience that affords opportunities for academic growth and creative expression for students.

Special Education (All Levels)
WPS’ Extended Year Services are designed to support eligible students with disabilities who demonstrate regression in previously mastered skills that are included on students’ Individual Education Programs (IEPs). Instruction in academics, communication, socialization and related services are provided in a variety of programs that are designed to meet students’ needs.
Programming is available to students with disabilities in grades Pre-K through Grade 12+.
Extended Year Services are only available to students on IEPs and are discussed at annual IEP Team meetings. If your child qualifies, please reach out to their special education liaison.

ESL Summer Institute (All Levels)
Supports English Language development for students at entering and emerging levels. Curriculum is designed to promote academic language for the purposes of reading, writing and conversing. Instruction will be anti-racist and culturally responsive.
ESL students at the emerging and entering levels entering Grades 1-5 (Elementary Summer Institute), Grades 6 - 8 (Middle School Summer Institute), and Grades 9 - 12 (High School Summer Institute) as of September 2021
Students are recommended by classroom teacher or ESL teacher, based on academic need and WIDA ACCESS scores. If you have a question about your child’s eligibility, reach out to their classroom or ESL teacher.

Elementary Literacy & Math Camp (Elementary)
Aims to minimize summer loss in the areas of literacy and math and review concepts in skills from the previous school year, for elementary students. Components of art, drama, science, and physical education offered as part of the program.
Students entering Grades 1 - 5 as of September 2021
Students are referred by classroom teacher. Limited capacity is available. If you have a question about your child’s eligibility, reach out to their classroom teacher.

Middle School STEP - UP (Middle)
A collaboration between Kennedy and McDevitt Middle Schools, the STEP UP program provides students with the opportunity to participate in an engaging academic experience while building relationships with classmates and teachers.
The program will be held in-person at Kennedy and McDevitt Middle Schools. STEP UP runs for four weeks from July 12 - August 5. Students will meet with teachers and classmates Tuesday - Friday of each week from 8:00am - 12:00pm.
It is important that students are able to attend for the duration of the program. There is no fee to register and lunches and limited transportation will be provided free of charge.

Summer Robotics and Coding Program
Interested in playing with robots? Interested in learning how to make a robot work? Want to learn how to program a robot? You will learn how to do these and much more at the Waltham Summer Robotics Program.
Did you know that robotics engineering is one of the fastest growing science fields with about 55,000 projected job openings over the next few years? This summer program is an exciting way to start on this career path!
Students entering Grades 7 - 9 as of September 2021
An application form is required for all interested students. Prior to applying, please review the robotics program information and expectations. (Please note: Translation will be posted ASAP.) To apply, print the program information and expectations, fill out pages 5 - 7 and send it to Mr. Rooney or fill the application out digitally using the Robotics and Coding Program Student Application.

August Math Academy (Middle)
McDevitt and Kennedy Middle Schools are excited to announce a one week in-person math program for rising 6th graders during the week of August 9th - 13th.
This free math program will help prepare your student for 6th grade math in fun and engaging ways. Your student will be taught by their future middle school math teachers.
The program will run at McDevitt Middle School from 8:00am - 12:30pm. Lunch will be provided.
Students entering Grade 6, of September 2021. (Limited capacity)
Students are recommended by their fifth grade classroom/math teachers and/or math coach.

Credit Recovery (High School)
WHS’ Credit Recovery Summer School offers standard level courses designed to allow students to make up classes or review work not successfully completed or proved difficult during the year.
Waltham High School students

- History: US History 1, US History 2, World Geography
- Science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental
