Waltham Public Schools Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) Results

Since 2002, the Waltham Public Schools has been administering the YRBS to all our grade 7-12 students.  This survey is based on a national survey given in schools across the country on a regular basis.  It is a well tested and reliable source of information on various student health-related behaviors.

After reviewing the 2008 survey data, three areas of concern emerged from the data:

·        Alcohol use and other substance abuse,

·        Bullying and violent behaviors, and

·        Depression and suicide

Did you know...

  • 36% of all high school respondents report having attended parties held in homes in Waltham where alcohol use by teens is allowed [45% at grade 12]!  Beware: Learn about the the Social Host Liability Law.
  • 26% of all high school respondents report having 5 or more drinks in a row within a couple of hours (binge drinking)--Almost one out of three males and one out of four females [M-29%; F-22.5%].
  • 36% of all middle school respondents report having been bullied at school within the last year.
  • 22% of all high school respondents report having been bullied at school within the last year.
  • 15% of all high school respondents report having actually attempted suicide (6% in 2004--6.4% state) [M-17%; F-12.5%].
