The goal of this Instructional Technology Toolboxes is to document how the Waltham Public Schools maintains a clear focus on curriculum goals while assuring that students acquire technological skills in accordance with the Massachusetts Technology Literacy Standards and Expectations. To do this, we do not teach computer technology as a separate subject, instead, we strive to incorporate instructional technology into all curriculum areas while helping our students develop the technology skills they need. Wherever possible, we support the example of co-teaching "…in which an instructional technology specialist works in the classroom with a subject area teacher…."
The technology skills that students need to develop fall into three broad categories:
- Proficiency in the use of computers and applications as well as an understanding of concepts underlying hardware, software, and connectivity.
- Responsible use of technology and an understanding of ethics and safety issues in using electronic media.
- Ability to use technology for research, problem solving, and communication.
- Locate, evaluate, collect and process from a variety of electronic sources.
- Telecommunications to collaborate with peers, experts and other audiences.
In grades Pre-K-3 our goal is to follow the guidelines which expect districts to provide exploratory experiences with technology tools so that these students will have "enough exposure" to some of the tools they will be expected to use with proficiency in later grades.
In grades 4-8, we concentrate on developing students' skills in using technology tools. We develop these skills within the context of the regular curriculum, wherever possible, and we aim to collaborate with teacher to create learning opportunities that simply do not exist without technology. For example, in meeting our mathematics curriculum goals, graphing software allows students to effectively evaluate the same data in different types of graph formats including pie charts which are notably difficult to draw accurately by hand.
