Title I

Title I is the part of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) that supports programs in schools and school districts to improve the learning of children from low-income families. The U.S. Department of Education provides federal Title I funds to states to give to school districts based on the number of children from low-income families in each district.

The Title I education program offers academic support in language arts and mathematics in three Waltham elementary schools.   Services are provided in the classroom as well as through before and after school programs and extended year academic programs. Community outreach includes coordination of efforts with Even Start, school health services, the Waltham Public Library, Healthy Waltham, the Waltham Partnership for Youth.

Supplemental educational services (SES) are additional, free, tutoring services designed to increase the academic achievement of students in schools identified for improvement, corrective action or restructuring under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). Students from low-income families attending Title I schools may be eligible to receive SES tutoring.

The Department of Education has posted data on the number of students who were eligible for and participated in SES during the 2007-08 school year.  This data is available at: http://www.doe.mass.edu/ses/resources.html.

Currently SES services are offered to the three Title I schools in Waltham: the Plympton School, the Stanley School and the Whittemore School.  Parents of eligible students are notified of their eligibility and sent a list of local SES providers approved by the state. This help is provided free of charge and takes place outside the regular school day. In Waltham services are provided for eligible students at the Plympton, Stanley and Whittemore.

To view the list of approved providers go to the Massachusetts DESE "Find a Provider" page:
