School Closing Information

From Dr. Nicholson:

The decision as to whether to cancel school or delay the opening of school is made by the Superintendent of Schools after consideration of several weather reports and in consultation with Safety Officer Ann Frassica, Consolidated Public Works, the transportation company, and other area school superintendents. The decision will be made based on road conditions throughout the city as well as on the ability to clear school driveways, parking lots, entrances/exits, and sidewalks.

Conditions can vary in different neighborhoods across the city. Parents are in the best position to judge the situation in their own neighborhood and to make informed decisions regarding safety. During inclement weather, no parent will be expected to send a child to school if the parent believes that the child’s safety will be endangered. The ultimate decision on whether to send a child to school is the parents’. Additionally, I would like to alert parents to consider the advisability of allowing inexperienced student drivers on the road even when school is open.

Communication of Closures and Delays

The decision to close or delay the opening of school is typically made by 5:30 a.m. Once the decision is made, the district’s automated phone call system will be used to communicate this information to families and staff. For our families, the message will be sent to the phone number listed on the student’s emergency card. It is very important for the school district to have the most current contact information so if your phone number has changed since the beginning of the school year, please contact the secretary at your child’s school. Parents/guardians should receive the automated phone message between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.

Cancelation and delay information will be broadcast on WBZ TV Channel 4, WCVB TV Channel 5, WHDH TV Channel 7, WFXT TV Channel 25, WBZ Radio AM 1030, and Waltham’s WE-TV. The Waltham Public Schools website page will be updated as soon as possible.

Delay Information

There may be occasions when the option of delaying the opening of school by one or two hours is utilized. For example, it could be predicted that weather conditions will improve quickly or that an additional bit of time is needed to fully clear school parking lots or city streets. If there is a one-hour delay, children will be picked up by the buses one hour later than typically scheduled. Walkers and children transported to school by parents should plan on arriving one hour later than the typical arrival time. Please do not drop off your child any earlier than the start time listed. If there is a two-hour delay, then bus pick-up will be two-hours later than typically scheduled. Walkers and children transported to school by parents should arrive two-hours later than the typical arrival time.

When there is a one-hour or two-hour delay, the morning session of pre-school will be canceled. Families will need to make advanced contingency plans for child care that can be implemented quickly in the event of a delayed opening. Dismissal times will remain the same unless otherwise indicated. In the past, there has been confusion regarding the impact that school delays have on some of our programs. Therefore, I am including the following specific information that I hope will be helpful to you.

Early Dismissals

Under rare circumstances, the Superintendent of Schools may determine that inclement weather will impact the safety of the afternoon commute and will dismiss school early. If such a decision is made, we will notify families using the emergency function of our automated phone system. This information will be distributed to the previously mentioned television and radio stations as well as posted on the district’s website. Families are asked to plan ahead regarding child care and/or parent pick-up in case such a situation occurs.
