Internet Use

What are examples of unacceptable use of accessing Internet sites?
  • Purchasing personal items.
  • Personal banking and paying bills online.
  • Searching and making arrangements for vacations.
  • Visiting sites for personal entertainment.

Is the Internet filtered and what does "MIS monitoring use" mean?

Internet access is filtered and monitored by an application called Surf Control with the ability to pull data by user and/or by computer to see what Internet sites have been accessed and when, along with the frequency of access.

E-mail communication is archived with the ability to retrieve all communications by users.  E-mail communication in the public schools is considered public information.

Files or data stored on school servers can also be monitored.

MIS reserves the right to access and monitor any computer or other electronic device connected to the network.

What or who is MIS?

MIS means Management Information System.  The MIS team in the Waltham Public Schools is: Don Davidson, Pedro DeLeon; Jason Forbes, Bob Kennen, Scott LeLievre and Patrick Montjoie.

Why does the district need to monitor use?

The district needs to monitor use to assure that our resources, e.g. funding is not being wasted.  All e-mails and all files are backed up daily.  These backs-ups are stored on media.  The more e-mails and the more files that we need to back-up, the more media we need to purchase.  When the staff and students access the Internet from the school network, everyone gets on one "highway" to get out to the Internet.  That "highway" gets very busy during school hours.  It is important that traffic on the Internet is only traffic for educational use.
