Welcome to Northeast !!!

The Northeast Elementary School's theme for 2012 - 2013 is a focus on our Core Value of Success: Be Proud of Your Accomplishments!

Greetings! I hope that you are all geared up to participate in our Northeast Walks! Program this spring. We will have two walking buses – one starting from Our Lady’s parking lot and one from the corner of Doty and Circle (at 7:45 a.m.). A Walking Bus is a group of people who walk from one location to another and “picks up” other walkers along the way. On Wednesday, May 2nd we have arranged, with parental permission, buses and vans to stop and drop off students on the corner of Abbott and Warwick so they can participate in the walking bus. We will honor permission that was given in the fall but if you haven’t sent in a slip, please send back the permission slip or a note that will allow your child to do this at your earliest convenience. Also, we are giving fruit to all walkers each day during the first week, April 30th – May 4th and colored jelly bracelets to all students who walk, take the bus or carpool.

Ms. Gordon and I are working on a special challenge this year! As we have done in the past, we are looking for, at the end of the school year, an average of 225 walkers! If all of our students rise to the occasion, we will have special treat for the school community. In the past building administrators have painted our faces, kissed a beautiful pig and, had a pie in the face! Last year we each did a stunt involving a lift in the gym! Who knows what will happen this year!

We are about to embark on our classroom placement process! This procedure, is a multi-step process that involves classroom teachers, special educators, ESL teachers and administrators in the decision making process. All teachers from each grade level meet with an administrator and other educational staff people and plan out tentative class lists. These lists are typed up in draft form and go out to teachers for their comments. Last year most grades had at least two drafts. Please be assured that this process is completed with much care and thought and definitely with teacher in-put throughout the process! You will find out who will be your child’s teacher on the last day of school. Students will get to visit their new teachers on the last day of school.

A May column would not be complete without a reminder that students in Grades 3, 4 and 5 will be participating in the MCAS this month. Grades 4 and 5 students will be taking their Math test beginning the week of May 6th. Students in Grade 3 will take their Math test beginning on May 13th. Grade 5 students will be taking their Science beginning on May 15th. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns about the test administration. To support your child during this time, make sure she or he has a good night’s sleep, eats a healthy breakfast and has plenty of down time during the testing. It can be a stressful time for students and we want to make sure that we give our students all the support and encouragement we can!

I hope you are able to get out and enjoy the May flowers!
